Intense pain in the back can be due to a number of causes, one that we see quite often here at Bellevue Whiplash Center, at Back in Action Chiropractic is because of car accidents. Yes, thats right, car accidents can injure more than JUST your neck! It’s actually quite easy to have your back injured in an auto accident. The injury usually is a sprain or strain to the tendons, muscles and ligaments that support your back.
Weak, injured muscles due to the accident may suddenly go into spasm from performing the simplest movements. If the discs of your low back, muscles and ligaments can become unbalanced, and it can lead to a misalignment in your spine and create the perfect conditions for acute back pain.
Chiropractic therapy again and again has been proven to be an effective treatment for reducing acute back pain due to injury, and does it in a very safe and cost-effective way. Conventional medical treatment for back pain has not been shown as successful. The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, an organization sponsored by the federal government, recommended that people with low back pain first seek treatment using spinal adjustments, as it is safe, effective and does not require drugs.
A study published in the December 2010 issue of The Spine Journal found that patients who were suffering from acute lower back pain had positive results after treatment with chiropractic manipulation, as opposed to no improvement in the control group who were treated with pain medication and physical therapy. The researchers reported that after 16 weeks, “78% of patients in the UC [conventional treatment] group were still taking narcotic analgesic medications on either a daily or as needed basis.” And that “treatment including CSMT [chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy] is associated with significantly greater improvement in condition-specific functioning.”
If you have been in a car accident and find that your low back is in pain, find a chiropractor to assess your injury's and implement an appropriate treatment plan.
